avail-avert

avail (v)
有用;有益 To be of use or advantage to; help. Example: Nothing could avail the dying cat. Acoustic
guitar will no longer avail. David avails himself of every chance to improve his Chinese. (n) 效用;利
益;利潤 Use, benefit, or advantage. The police searched everywhere to no avail. Idiom: avail
(oneself) of = to make use of.

avalanche (n)
雪崩;山崩 a massive slide of snow, ice, rock or debris down a mountainside; 突然來到的大量事物
a massive amount of things that happen or arrive at the same time. Example: The station received an
avalanche of inquiries.

avant-garde (adj)
前衛的 different from existing techniques in a given field, especially in the arts. Avant-garde art,
painter, theater piece, literature, or music is often in a way that is strange or shocking. (n) 藝術界先
鋒,前衛派.

avarice (n)
貪慾 Extreme desire for wealth; cupidity; extremely greed. Antonym (反義字): philanthropy 博愛;
仁慈. Avaricious (adj)

avenge (v)
為...進行報復 To take vengeance on behalf of; revenge. Example: Peter plans to avenge his father's
death. Avenger (n)

averse (adj)
反對的;不願意的 Having a feeling of opposition, distaste, or aversion. Examples: Our investors are
averse to taking risks. I don't drink much, but I'm not averse to the occasional glass of wine. David is
averse to come. Aversion (n) a strong dislike of something or someone: • Mary has an aversion to
cats.

avert (v)
避免; 避開; 防止 to prevent something bad from happening; to look away from something.
Examples: The car accident could've been averted if you'd listened to us. You should avert your eyes
from the sun.
